Shows how simple sender-initiated distribution schemes, like those behind HTTP and FTP, can thrash, cycle and even turn chaotic under heavy load, and argues that adding randomness to the scheduling helps them degrade gracefully.
Old Programming: PolyBlocks 1987
PolyBlocks is a polyomino enumerator I wrote in 1987, when I was 14 or 15 years old.
The original is very slow in the online emulator, but you can run it much faster in a modern BBC BASIC emulator, like the one from RT Russell.
There is also a modern, superfast version. It has verified the number of free polyominoes from order 3 up to 18 – the sequence in OEIS:A000105. The browser version isn’t as fast as running it locally, but it works.
